General thoracic and esophageal surgery

The General Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery Program, partnering with the VCU Massey Cancer Center and the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, includes multidisciplinary care for surgery of benign and malignant disorders of the lungs, airways, mediastinum and esophagus.

The Thoracic Surgery program provides comprehensive diagnoses and innovative, cutting-edge and minimally invasive treatment of lung, esophageal, and airway cancers, airway reconstruction, chest wall and diaphragm disorders, mediastinal tumors, lung transplantation, emphysema interventions, and benign esophageal disease.

We are also a major referral center for complex thoracic conditions. Our board-certified thoracic surgeons have extensive experience across the full spectrum of thoracic surgical procedures and treat conditions such as:

  • Benign and malignant esophageal disease
  • Lung cancer
  • Disorders of the trachea, or airway
  • Thymic disorders
  • Chest wall deformities
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS)
  • Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating

We constantly strive to investigate and incorporate the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS)—each for lung cancer. We also implement the latest staging modalities such as Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS).
