For Your Family

  • The surgical waiting area is located on the 5th floor of the Gateway Building.
  • The surgical team will communicate with the family here.  Please notify the receptionist if family members leave this area.
  • To help communication between the surgical team and your family, please pick a family spokesperson, and let the team know who this person is.  All information will be given to this person to communicate with the rest of the family.
  • After the operation, the surgeon will speak to your family.
  • After your family has been notified that the surgery is over, please wait 45 minutes before coming to the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to give the ICU staff time to get you settled into the unit.
  • After 45 minutes, family may then come to the 10th floor of the Critical Care Hospital Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU).
  • The waiting area is located outside of the CSICU.
  • A phone, located outside of the unit, is used to let the CSICU staff know that the family has arrived.  Follow the directions located at the phone to contact the CSICU staff.
  • The direct CSICU number is 828-9176.  We ask that only the family spokesperson use this number.
  • Please speak to the nurse in the unit about children visiting.
  • Do not bring food and drinks for your loved one.  Food and drinks with a lot of sugar can raise the risk of infection and slow healing
