In the Hospital

Heart surgery patients are often in the hospital for 5-10 days.  The surgery usually takes 4-6 hours.

When you leave the ICU, you will stay on the Cardiac Progressive Care Unit. (10th floor Main Hospital) until discharged from the hospital.  All patient rooms are private, single patient rooms.  Your family may be able to stay in the room with you.  Please have your family check with your nurse.

On the Progressive care unit, your care is coordinated by your surgeon and the nurse practitioners with nurses and other members of the healthcare team.  A Care Coordinator will work with you to make arrangements for your discharge from the hospital.

  • While in the hospital you will be on a heart healthy and diabetic diet (even if you do not have diabetes).  This helps keep blood sugar levels in the normal range to help healing.

  • You and your loved ones will be asked to limit the sugar you eat and drink to help healing right after surgery.   Drinking diet drinks (no juice or soda) helps keep your blood sugar levels low which helps you heal.

  • Your blood sugar will be checked often while you are in the hospital to be sure it stays in the safe level.

  • Expect to walk and feed yourself before discharge.
